Charles R. Smith Visits
The Baldwin School warmly welcomed author Charles R. Smith, Jr. on April 24. The entire building was abuzz! Mr. Smith, an award-winning author, photographer, poet, and fitness coach greeted students from all grades. He told the students of his inspiring journey and of his accomplishments He spoke of the famous people he photographed, of his travels to 43 states, of his favorite places and he recited some of his beautiful poetry. He emphasized that he focuses on the development of mind, body and spirit, and that to be successful, we need to "get comfortable with being uncomfortable."
Thank you to Ms. Kugel for arranging for this incredible opportunity for our students. Thank you, Friends of Baldwin, for making these author visits a tradition for the Baldwin students. It is something we look forward to all year.
The students talked about being amazed by Mr. Smith's involvement in
America's Top Ninja Warrior and also seeing Shaq's shoe! They really enjoyed his poetry and how he made the words come to life. Here are a few student remarks about the day:
"I was amazed! I think you are the best. Your book is the best in the world. I want to become just like you. Your books inspire me to read. I want to be like you." - Malachi
"Thanks for coming to our school! I loved your poems and your books. I like how all your books are about peace, history, creativity and more!.... I also loved when you showed us the huge shoe. It made me feel really creative 'cause I didn't think that it was possible to have a shoe that big. You did a good job." - Colette
"Thank you!! Thank you for coming to the Baldwin School and telling us what you do! It was so fun. Please come back soon. " - Chloe
From Ms. Kugel: "We are building readers and writers, and when we connect them to authors, we inspire them to see themselves as writers and encourage them to read. It truly brings books to life!"
