If you Google “supporting your child’s literacy at home,” you will find a mind-boggling number of links to websites – 307,000,000 results the last time I tried it! Most of us have neither the time nor the patience to wade through this overload of information. One website for parents that I can highly recommend is called Reading Rockets. It took its name from an article written in 1999 by Louisa
C. Moats, an expert in teaching reading, entitled “Teaching Reading IS Rocket Science.” A description from the website provides an overview:
Reading Rockets is a national multimedia literacy initiative offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help.
The link below brings you to a section of the website specifically devoted to parents. This one website has many wonderful and useful resources that are worth exploring to help you find ways to support your child at home. You can sign up to receive their “Growing Readers” parent e-newsletter that provides monthly tips. Reading Rockets is also available through various social media.
