As part of the school-wide reading challenge, We Speak for the Trees, the City Arborist David Lefcourt came to the Baldwin on April 11 to talk to classes about trees. David's job as city arborist is to take care of 13,000 street trees in Cambridge. Did you know that there are 87 unique street tree species in Cambridge? The most common trees are Norway maple, honeylocust, red maple, pear, and little leaf linden. In our kindergarten classes, Mr. Lefcourt talked about how trees grow and the benefits of trees. He talked about how a tree defends itself with its bark and how to care for trees. The older students learned the importance of tree diversity. It improves the overall vigor of the forest and reduces vulnerability to invasive insects and disease.
