STEMSTEM Fair spent Friday morning learning about evolution and looking at how animals adapt to thrive in their habitats. Parent Josh Finkelstein led the students on an exploration of the many amazing organisms in the world, from the water-walking basilisk lizard to the flying fish to the carnivorous Venus fly trap. They started by watching a few short video clips of some remarkable animals: flying fish, mimic octopus, wood frog, armadillo, axolotl, and basilisk lizard. Each of these animals evolved from simpler organisms and have adapted to their habitats (where they live). They learned how characteristics of a group of animals can change over time.

Each student then designed an imaginary animal made of clay, toothpicks, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, and feathers. Students were asked to describe the animal’s habitat, its source of food, predators (if any) that try to eat the animal, and ways their imaginary animal evolved to protect itself or hide from predators.
