SRTS offer pedestrian education to Cambridge students helping students learn traffic safety skills and help them navigate the city safely by foot or bicycle. Our second grade students enjoyed this unit during their physical education class with Mr. Gladu.

Students learned about walking in the community. They learned basic consideration, thoughtfulness and manners.

Pedestrian safety lessons included the demonstration of safe practices near traffic, understanding how to safely cross streets and intersections, reviewing traffic signals, learning about crosswalk signals, "waiting for the wave", and how to properly walk across the street.

Students learned to navigate parking lots, safe walking behavior when exiting a vehicle and crossing the drive lanes. They learned the clues that suggest a car may move (red brake lights or white reverse light illuminated, hearing a running motor, the small of exhaust coming from the car.

During the bicycle safety lesson, they learned the ABC's of bike maintenance (air, brakes and chain). Every second grade student was presented with a free helmet, thanks to the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School program.
